Oxnard police identify homicide victim

A death investigation is underway in Oxnard, a portion of Vineyard Avenue was shut down.

Oxnard Police said the victim is identified as 25-year-old Giovanni Vega of Oxnard. No suspect description was provided to police.

Police say at about 5:50 a.m. they received a call to do a welfare check on a person spotted on the ground in the 200 block of Vineyard Avenue. Upon arrival police said they discovered the deceased man and immediately began an investigation.

Police say it appears Vega suffered a gunshot wound. They say an officer responded to a report of gunshots heard in the area around midnight but was not able to locate any suspicious activity.

All lanes of Vineyard Avenue between Oxnard Boulevard and H Street were closed to traffic.

Police say this homicide investigation is not related to the Wednesday death on Almanor Drive.
