Health And Safety Warnings Issued To Public Before Storm

Public health officers and firefighters issued warnings to the public prior to first December storm.

After years of drought, storm water runoff is likely to fail bacteria tests at area beaches.

Surfers and swimmers are at increased risk for rashes, fever, chills, ear infections, vomiting, and diarrhea. People should avoid discolored water that could be linked to pollutants. Surfers and swimmers should stay out of the water for at least 3 days after a storm.

Firefighters are also issuing warnings about fireplaces and flooding.

They say fireplaces need to be checked before use to make sure there are no obstructions.

Some fire stations are also offering sand and sandbags to prevent flooding. Station 14 off Los Carneros Road in Santa Barbara also has shovels to use on the premises.
