Search Suspended for Missing Man at Lake Cachuma

Lake Cachuma is back open Sunday after members of the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Dive Team suspended their search for a man who went missing Friday night just before 8 p.m.

The 22-year-old man was last seen going underwater. A visitor called 9-1-1 to report that two people were in the water, and another man was waving his arms in distress from a boat.

Park Rangers responded and rescued one man from the water and a man in the boat, but could not locate the third person. The search was called off on Friday at 10:00 p.m. because of poor visibility.

Search crews were back out at the scene on Saturday morning combing the area where the missing man was last seen. The water is about 80 feet deep.

The search was again suspended on Saturday afternoon because of zero visibility. If conditions improve, the dive team may be called out again.

County Park rangers plan to continue patrolling in the area when the man disappeared.

The possible drowning victim has not been identified.
