Work underway at McGrath State Beach
The campground at McGrath State Beach has been flooded for months. Repairs began Tuesday to fix the problem and a water diversion plan is underway. Workers are using a pump to release the water back into the ocean. Usually spring showers wash away the sandbar between the park and the ocean but because of the drought, the water remains trapped in the campgrounds. Workers remain cautious about protecting endangered species in the water. Rain for Rent is the name of one of the companies doing the work that will also prevent the area from becoming a mosquito breeding ground. This isn’t the first time McGrath has had to be saved. Two years ago, a grassroots campaign saved it from state budget cuts. Birdwatchers, beachgoers, campers and tourists are anxious about the camp’s reopening.
