“Olive Fire” near Santa Ynez ruled accidental
UPDATE: Santa Barbara County fire investigators have determined that two power lines touching in strong winds started the Olive Fire near Santa Ynez on Tuesday. They have ruled the cause of the fire to be accidental.
The fire broke out about 3:30 p.m. Tuesday near Meadowvale and Tivola Roads. Residents called NewsChannel 3 describing heavy smoke in the area.
NewsChannel Three reporter Sara Bush reported the fire spread from a few acres to out of control in just a few minutes. Firefighters stopped the fire at 170 acres at 8 p.m., but stayed on scene to put out any hot spots. About 2,000 homes had been placed on evacuation warning at one point.
The fire broke out in grass near homes. Air tankers were diverted from fighting the “White Fire” burning nearby to fight the “Olive Fire.”
The CHP has reopened Highway’s 154 and 246.
So far, there are no reports of any injuries or damage. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
