Central Coast residents react to California lawmakers’ vote to make abortions cheaper

CENTRAL COAST, Calif. – California lawmakers have voted to make abortions much cheaper for people on private health insurance plans. Central Coast residents have mixed reaction toward this decision.

The Assembly voted on Thursday to ban private health plans from charging things like co-pays or deductibles for abortions.

The bill is headed for a Senate vote before heading to the governor's desk.

If signed into law, California would become the fourth state to ban these fees.

Democrats are trying to make it easier to get an abortion in California ahead of a potential U.S. Supreme Court decision this summer that could overturn Roe v. Wade.

A bill would create a fund of public and private dollars to help people coming to California to get abortions.

Some living in the Central Coast disagree with the proposed bill.

They say no one has a right to take a life away.

“The insurance companies, you know, whenever they legitimize abortion, they are abolitionists,” said Nipomo resident Juan Cantu. “A lot of mistakes are made, I don't blame people for their mistakes. but don’t take a life for your mistake. ”

While some hope this bill passes because they hear about people struggling to pay for an abortion.

“I think they should reduce the cost. you know, it needs to be made available and stay in place for people that need to have it done,” said Central Coast resident Lori Rasmussen.

If signed into law, California would become the fourth state to ban these fees.
