Orcutt educators lay the groundwork for a successful year
ORCUTT, Calif. - Teachers in Orcutt are starting the school year prepared - both for their students and themselves.
The Orcutt Educators Association worked with Orcutt Union School District leaders to lay the groundwork for a successful year.
Together, they created a Memorandum of Understanding to supplement teachers' contracts, creating clear parameters for things like safety, online class sizes and boundaries for teachers. Monique Segura is president of the Orcutt Educators Association and a longtime teacher. “We’ve got to work for silver linings right now. And one of the things I am happy to say is that educators are coming together,” said Segura.
Teachers worked endless hours over the summer preparing for both a hybrid and full distance learning model. “Our teachers and our staff have really put their heart and soul into everything that they do to benefit our students,” said Superintendent Holly Edds.
“As a collective bargaining unit, we needed to meet with the district to put some language in place,” said Segura. Both parties agreed that negotiations went smoothly and students were a top priority. Edds said, “There were a lot of common interests such as keeping our students and staff safe, and making sure we provide a well-rounded education in these really challenging times.”
“I think sometimes the public forgets we have families, we have children we have loved ones that we live with or care for. So thankfully there’s some language in our M-O-U's that teachers have some options,” said Segura.
