Look for the Helpers: Mother’s Day serenade, stay-at-home concert for kids
As our area is faced with ongoing changes due to a growing pandemic, we are bringing stories of people doing good in the community during a time of uncertainty.
Help us look for the helpers!
Mother's Day Serenade
Celebrating Mother's Day while physically distancing was a challenge this year.
But, 16-year-old Katy Caballero wanted to make sure her great-grandmother Filomena Abundiz knew how much her family cares for her.
So, Caballero serenaded the 89-year-old on her front porch in Santa Barbara with a special song she wrote just for her.
Abundiz was overcome with emotion.
Teen Star at Home
Talented teens and young adults used their voices for a good cause over the weekend.
Teen Star, a local singing competition highlighting the best singers in Santa Barbara County, hosted a Stay at Home concert to raise money for local non-profits.
Nine past Teen Star winners performed.
The money raised goes to the Food Bank and the United Boys and Girls Club to feed local kids.
So far the live stream on Facebook has nearly 2,000 views.
Keeping the Lights On
A group of cannabis farmers in Carpinteria are helping the local economy survive during COVID-19.
The Carp Growers Association started a program called "Keep the Lights On."
The intent is to help restaurants stay open amid the pandemic.
Farmers who are part of the group order lunch on Tuesday's and Friday's from local restaurants for their farm crews.
Since March, thousands of meals have been ordered and delivered.
The group said restaurants owners say they are deeply grateful for the support.
