Lucia Mar school district announces plans for drive through high school graduations
ARROYO GRANDE, Calif. -- High school seniors in South San Luis Obispo County will have their graduation ceremonies in a drive thru format.
In an email sent to parents of Nipomo High School seniors, Lucia Mar Unified School District announced alternative plans for the new format Wednesday morning.
The district also released when the graduation ceremonies will take place.
Some of the dates and times have been changed, including Arroyo Grande High School, which will have its ceremony several days earlier than originally scheduled.
The Arroyo Grande ceremony will be held on Saturday, May 30, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., and 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the front parking lot.
Students will attend one of the two planned times.
The Arroyo Grande graduation was previously scheduled for Thursday, June 4.
Nipomo will hold its ceremony on Friday, June 5, from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the front parking lot.
The date for graduation date remains the same for Nipomo.
Central Coast New Tech will have graduation in the school quad on Thursday, May 28, from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.
The new ceremony is several days earlier than originally planned.
New Tech was suppose to have its graduation take place on Saturday, June 6.
Lopez will hold graduation on Wednesday, June 3, from 4 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. in the front parking lot.
The date for Lopez graduation remains the same from its original schedule.
According to the email sent to parents, some of the changes in times and dates were due to organizational needs and law enforcement requests.
The decision comes after the district held online surveying over the past couple of weeks.
Seniors, as well as parents and guardians, were given a series of questions that asked which type of alternate graduation ceremony they would most like to see.
The district also said it will purchase a copy of the official graduation picture for each graduate.
There are more than 700 seniors at the four high schools combined within the district.
The district said more details about the drive through ceremonies will be released in the near future.
