37-year-old man identified as third inmate to die of COVID-19 at Lompoc prison
LOMPOC, Calif. - The Bureau of Prisons has released additional information about the latest inmate to die at the Lompoc prisons of COVID-19.
On Monday, 37-year-old Mohamed Yusuf was found unresponsive at the Federal Correctional Institution - the minimum-security prison at the Lompoc Federal Correctional Complex.
BOP says responding staff began life-saving measures but Yusuf was pronounced dead by paramedics.
Yusuf had tested positive for COVID-19 on May 7 and was placed in isolation per Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines.
Yusuf was serving a 132-month sentence out of the Eastern District of New York for Conspiracy to Provide Material Support to a Foreign Terrorist Organization.
He had been in custody at FCI Lompoc since May 2018.
There have been three deaths within the Lompoc prison system. The first two deaths were inmates who were in custody at USP Lompoc, the medium-security prison at the correctional complex.
On Friday, California lawmakers sent a third letter to BOP Director Michael Carvajal requesting more open communication lines and more action to slow the spread of COVID-19 within the prison walls.
Details regarding Yusuf's death were not made available to our newsroom until Friday afternoon.
