The Foodbank of Banta Barbara County is running low on donated food supplies.

In light of their struggles, a local fitness organization decided to put on its first half marathon to help the foodbank.

Stephen Stowe of Bond Fitness decided to put on the first annual Bondgiving, a 5k walk and run in support of the foodbank.

“31,000 families are looking for their next meal. We wanted to come together as a community to support the community of Santa Barbara,” Stowe said.

In less than two hours, more than 200 participants came together bringing in 1,800 pounds of food.

“It's incredibly important. This is helping the big deficit we have right now, especially as we go into the holiday season,” said director of community engagement Lisa Skvarla with the foodbank.

Some of the runners said this 5k inspires them to give to the community throughout the year.

“It's a reminder like, hey maybe lets donate some cans to the foodbank when we're not using them from the kitchen,” said participant Araceli Huerta.

Organizers said they plan to continue putting on this race as an annual event.
