According to Ventura Police Department, the school went on lockdown after the fight because there was a reported weapon at the scene.

Below is a statement issued to parents and staff from the Ventura Unified School District:

Good afternoon, Buena families,

As you know we had a lockdown occur during lunch today.  I want to thank the Ventura Police Department (VPD) for its quick response.  The lockdown occurred when school administrators were notified about an altercation occurring on campus.  VPD, campus administrators, and staff worked to keep students and staff safe while the individuals involved were identified.

We are aware that there are a number of rumors going around about what occurred. VPD and Buena administration continue to investigate the matter and cannot comment at this time on any of those rumors.

After the lockdown was lifted, students were released to their 6th-period classes, and students and staff who were off campus during the lockdown have been allowed back on campus.

We understand situations such as this concern parents, students, and the greater community. We will continue to work with the Ventura Police Department to ensure we are sending you timely communications and most of all that we are keeping your children safe, which is our first priority. We will also have counselors and staff available in the event any of our students are feeling anxious or need to talk.

Thank you,

Principal Asplund
