Sewage spill due to storm damage closes multiple Ventura County beaches
VENTURA, Calif. – Two sewer lines damaged by recent rainstorms have been repaired, but not before leaking around 14 million gallons of sewage into the Ventura River and surrounding beaches causing ongoing closures.
The Ojai Valley Sanitary District was able to complete temporary repairs to two damaged sewer lines and stop the associated leaks on Jan. 12.
Ocean water samples have been taken to determine the extent of the impact and if area beaches meet state standards for reopening.
The latest ocean water samples taken on Jan. 19 still exceeded acceptable bacterial content. The next samples will be collected on Jan. 23.
The Ventura County Environmental Health Division advises the public to avoid all contact with ocean water at the following beaches:
- Mondos Cove Beach
