Dos Pueblos holds on to edge Elsinore in boys basketball playoffs

It’s not often that a team goes scoreless in the final 3:30 of a game and still wins. But Dos Pueblos used two late defensive stops including one in the final seconds as they held on to beat Elsinore 49-48 in a CIF Division 2A playoff game at Sovine Gym.

Leading 47-41, Gerry Perez stole the ball and dished to Cruz Mertens for a layup that gave the Chargers an eight point lead but they never scored again. Elsinore cut the deficit to one with 1:30 left but missed a couple of contested layups and lost.

The crowd rushed the floor following the game as the Chargers are off to the quarterfinals where they will play at Tesoro on Friday. Mertens had a team-high 18 points for the Chargers.
