Energy conservation tips offered during heat wave
SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – Power customers can do their part to save energy before forecasted temperatures begin to break records.
Southern California Edison's Public Safety Advisor Reggie Kumar said people don't have to wait for a Flex Alert to conserve.
The California Independent System Operator (ISO) has not issued an alert, but recommends people sign up for notifications at flexalert.org.
Pacific Gas & Electric's Communication Representative Mark Mesesan said the goal is to stay healthy during a heat wave by staying hydrating, and getting indoors.
"Cool down with a fan if you don't have air conditioning, that is something that you can do. Use your appliances, not in the middle of the day, practice energy conservation by running appliances in the evenings or later at night, those kinds of things can help a lot," said Mesesan.
People without air conditioning may want to let cool air in by opening windows during the coolest hours of the day.
Both SCE and PGE offer simple conservation tips.
- Before the heat hits, lower air conditioning thermostats, and charge electric vehicles, mobile devices and laptops.
- Run dishwashers, washing machines and other major appliances before the forecasted heat arrives.
- Set thermostats to 78 degrees when home and 85 or turn it off when away.
- Use fans to give overused air conditioning a break.
- Grill outdoors.
- Shut off lights whenever possible.
- Close blinds to keep out the heat.
- Limit the opening of refrigerators.
- Turn off power strips or unplug devices that are not in use.
- Give your dryer a vacation and hang clothes to dry.
