Crashed boat creates a danger to the coastline near Carpinteria

NEAR CARPINTERIA, Calif. - Clean up is planned this week where a private boat crashed on the shores up the coast from Santa Claus Beach near Carpinteria.
The vessel snapped away from its offshore anchorage in Santa Barbara and was spotted Saturday.
The vessel has since started to break up.There is a debris field for a half a mile.

Items from inside the vessel that ended up on the sand, were piled up by residents to keep them from being brought into the ocean by tides.

These include a refrigerator, deck chairs, engine oils and lubricants, and boater safety gear.

The Coast Guard and the Department of Fish and Wildlife came out to oversee the scene,  and Patriot Environmental Services off loaded fuels that could leak into the ocean.
 It took hours of work.

This morning beach walkers saw the vessel had been further damaged by wave action.

The top was missing.  "I think it's down by 4th beach over by Ash Ave.," said resident Theresa Smith.  She also found a toilet up on the shores.

Normally boats that run aground are from just outside of the Santa Barbara harbor but don't  often end up down the coast in the Carpinteria area.

Ceil Schmepple said "and who knows what he has for gasoline and diesel inside. The only thing is, the poor guy is going to have to pay for it."

Because of the urgency to get the collapsing vessel from splintering apart, emergency action is expected to take place at low tide this week to  haul it away.

Groups including Heal the Ocean have been advocating for a faster response by agencies including the Santa Barbara County Sheriff's department when deciding how much time an owner has to respond to a boat crash on the shoreline.
