Creeks in Montecito get a new assessment after recent rains

MONTECITO, Calif. - After steady rain over several days, creeks in Montecito are getting a close up look to see if there's been any significant debris flows or sediment movement. So far no major issues have been reported.

There will also be the release of a debris flow map Thursday that's been redesigned based on several factors. They include the removal of tons of debris from basins and creeks along with the installation of ring nets in six locations.

Residents have been invited to a town hall meeting on the winter preparations and new debris flow maps in the auditorium at Montecito Union School starting at 5:30 p.m. Flood control officials, first responders and elected officials will be on hand.

Phil Van Horn is a resident who says the intense rain that caused a debris flow was extremely rare. "I think we are probably in a little better shape this year. Because they have done a lot of work and the chances of having a rain storm like we had that time are pretty slim."

Others look at the hills differently.

"I'm still a little nervous. I just hope we don't have the floods like we did a few years ago that was horrible," said resident Karen Peterson while coming out of a local store.
