Police arrest suspect in assault of woman near Santa Barbara train tracks

Santa Barbara Police Department arrested a man suspected to be involved in the assault of an adult woman by the railroad train tracks on Friday in Santa Barbara.

Police arrested Leo Burl Butler, 40, of Santa Barbara on Friday.

The incident happened last Friday around 9:16 a.m. Officers responded to the railroad tracks located at the intersection of Bath Street and Montecito Street to aid and investigate an assault of an adult female who sustained a serious head injury as a result of the attack.

Investigators believed the male suspect was not known to the victim.

Butler was taken into custody for violation of his parole.

Later that day, detectives requested he be arraigned under three felonies related to the railroad attack.

He was booked on assault with a deadly weapon, battery with great bodily harm and a great bodily harm enhancement.

Butler is being held at Santa Barbara County Jail on $500,000 bail. The bail enhancement was granted.
