The Harold J. Miossi Charitable Trust awards $20K to Big Brothers Big Sisters of San Luis Obispo
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- A local Trust Foundation donated $20,000 to the Big Brother Big Sisters of San Luis Obispo County on Tuesday.
The Harold J. Miossi Charitable Trust awarded a grant of $20,000 to Big Brothers Big Sisters in support of the agency’s school-based youth mentoring programs.
The program pairs high school and college students with elementary students for weekly supervised group and individual activities taking place at elementary school sites.
The program focuses on building friendships and bonds between at-risk children and older students who have volunteered to support them.
Due to school closures, these programs are more important than ever. The Big Brothers Big Sisters' staff provide each family with basic needs including food distributions, school lunches, rent/eviction relief programs, physical/mental health resources, support with unemployment applications, transportation, cahs aid and toiletries.
Each year, a group of carefully selected high school and college student mentors travel to their partner elementary school once each week for the entire school year.
The Trustee of the Trust gave the following statement on the program:
“The Miossi Trust believes that supporting programs targeting young students is building a stronger and more engaging community. Big Brothers Big Sisters is doing a terrific job working with at- risk students in our community."
Howard Carroll, Trustee of the Harold J. Miossi Charitable Trust
The partnership between the Trust and Big Brothers Big Sisters provide support of direct expenses to Pacheco Elementary and Del Mar Elementary for their School Based Program for one year.
Big Brothers Big Sisters CEO gave a statement on the generous donation from the Trust:
“For the last nine years, The Harold J. Miossi Charitable Trust’s support of our school based programs has provided hundreds of at-risk children and their high school mentors the positive support they need to ignite their potential, improve grades, seek higher aspirations, and engage in less risky behaviors. We are humbled by the Trust’s support of our mission and work with our next generation of leaders.”
Jenny Luciano, CEO of Big Brothers Big Sisters
The donation will bring the Trust’s total gift to $160,000 since 2012.
