SANTA MARIA, Calif. - Andrea Villalobos of Santa Maria is not only protecting her family and kids from the Coronavirus, she also suffers from allergies.

"They get pretty bad. I take allergy medicine every day," said Villalobos.

While the stay-at-home order continues, it’s nearly impossible to avoid all contact with allergens.

Dr. Scott Robertson with the Marian Regional Medical Center said while the coronavirus pandemic continues, it may be confusing for those with upper respiratory symptoms.

"Are these related to COVID-19 or are they related to seasonal allergies? Well seasonal allergies can be runny nose, congestion or eye itchiness. Those with asthma may even have some mild shortness of breath," said Robertson.

But there are key differences between allergies and COVID 19.

"For example, you would never get a fever with seasonal allergies and almost all patients will have some degree of fever off and on if they are suffering from COVID-19," said Robertson.

If you typically suffer from allergies, Robertson said you should take precautions now to keep your lungs as healthy as possible.

"If you’re someone that suffered from allergies in the past it’s best to try and over-the-counter allergy medication like Claritin Allegra or Zyrtec and see if that resolves your symptoms within 24 to 48 hours," said Robertson.

If you’re still unsure with your symptoms, Robertson said contact your primary care physician.
