City of Guadalupe moves forward in first reading of ordinance for commercial cannabis businesses
GUADALUPE, Calif. - Guadalupe is on track to become the latest city to allow commercial cannabis businesses.
Tuesday night the City Council voted 4 to 0 in favor of moving forward with a proposal.
City administrator Todd Bodem said he gets calls from people with questions about the potential for a cannabis business.
"I get calls daily and at least two or three every day about groups that are interested. There’s tremendous interest from the business community and entrepreneurs that are interested in working in the city of Guadalupe," said Bodem.
As the ordinance moves toward, officers with the Guadalupe Police said they are working to ensure that safety remains a priority in the community.
"We have one of the lowest crime rates, and that’s why they moved here, and they like the small town atmosphere so I wanna make sure I keep those commitments," said chief Michael Cash of the Guadalupe Police Department.
Bodem believes the opportunity for commercial cannabis businesses could build revenue for the city.
"The city is really becoming more dynamic in moving in a direction that some is just getting ahead to the curve like other committees are starting to develop cannabis programs," said Bodem.
The second and final vote on the ordinance is set for May 25.
