Ventura man arrested for Sunday assault with deadly weapon
VENTURA, Calif. – A Ventura man was arrested on Sunday evening for throwing a bottle at a man and woman and threatening officers with an ax during a three-hour standoff, according to the Ventura Police Department.
Just before 5:30 p.m., the suspect, a 56-year-old male, threw a bottle at a man and a woman in the area of the 500 block of Cedar Street in Ventura, nearly hitting them, the police department said, adding that the attack was unprovoked.
Officers attempted to contact the suspect, but he went back into his apartment, the police department said. At one point, the suspect exited his house, holding an ax and threatening the officers.
Officers unsuccessfully tried to get the man to come safely out of his residents for over three hours, the department said. The Ventura Police Department SWAT Team then took over the incident, and the man finally complied at around 1:30 a.m.
He was arrested for assault with a deadly weapon, resisting police officers, brandishing a weapon in the presence of officers, and criminal threats.
