Port Hueneme man facing murder charges after his car struck multiple bicyclists

PORT HUENEME, Calif. - A Port Hueneme man faces possible murder charges and attempted murder charges after he struck several bicyclists while he was driving. One teenager died at the hospital after being hit by the car.

Port Hueneme police received multiple calls Monday night at 9:27 p.m. for reports of a traffic collision that occurred near the intersection of North Ventura Road and East Pleasant Valley Road. The calls indicated that a vehicle had struck several bicyclists near the intersection and the driver left the scene.

“The group was about seven bicyclists all riding together and of those seven bicyclists, three of them were struck in the street,” said said Scott Matalon, Public Information Officer at the Hueneme Police Department.

Emergency personnel responded and located three teenaged boys all suffering from serious injuries. The boys were transported by ambulance to local hospitals.

“The kids were teenagers, somewhere between 14, 15 to 17 years old,” said Matalon.

One of the boys who was taken to the hospital died from his injuries. The second suffered major injuries and is currently in critical condition. The third boy has "significant injuries" to his lower body and is also currently hospitalized.

The suspect's vehicle fled the scene and was later found abandoned in the 500 block of East Clara Street in the City of Port Hueneme. However, the suspect later turned himself in to police and was taken into custody.

The investigation is in its preliminary stages, police said and Rocha was booked into jail on murder and attempted murder charges.

Anyone with information about the incident is urged to contact the Port Hueneme Police Department at 805-986-6530.
