POINT MUGU, Calif. -- One person died in a car crash on Monday at the Thornhill Broome Beach Campground entrance at Point Mugu in Ventura County.

At around 4:55 p.m. on Monday, California Highway Patrol officers with the Ventura County branch responded to reports of a head-on collision on Highway 1.

Officers found two cars involved, blocking both lanes on Highway 1.

One car was a 2010 Honda Civic and the other was a 2016 BMW 328d.

The Honda Civic was driving on the right shoulder of southbound Highway 1 when it decided to make a U-turn right in front of the BMW driving southbound on Highway 1.

The BMW hit the left side of the Honda Civic and the cars stopped in the right shoulder of northbound Highway 1.

The female driver of the Honda sustained fatal injuries on scene and died from her injuries. The passenger in the Honda sustained major injuries and was transported to Ventura County Medical Center by ambulance.

The driver of the BMW did not report any injuries on scene.

Both cars had major damage from the crash.

Highway 1 experienced traffic for two hours while CHP conducted an investigation.

Investigators say alcohol and drugs are not suspected to be a factor in the cause of this traffic collision.

The investigation is ongoing. Anyone who witnessed this crash is encouraged to call Ventura County CHP at 805-662-2640.
