Suspected driver in fatal Port Hueneme hit-and-run arrested
PORT HUENEME, Calif. -- Port Hueneme police arrested a suspect involved in a deadly hit and run on early Wednesday morning.
On Wednesday at around 5:30 a.m., Port Hueneme police responded to the scene of a deadly hit and run off of Ventura Road and Teakwood Street in Port Hueneme.
At arrival, police found that the bicyclist involved in the crash succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead on scene.
In their investigation, police found that a silver sedan was driving northbound on Ventura Road and crashed into a bicyclist crossing eastbound on Teakwood Street. After the crash, the sedan fled the scene.
An hour later the driver of the silver sedan returned to the scene.
Officers interviewed the driver and based on his statements, the driver was arrested and transported to the Port Hueneme Police Department.
At the station, officers conducted a Field Sobriety Test and found him to have a blood-alcohol level nearly twice the legal limit.
Officers interviewed witnesses and located the driver's car a few blocks away from the crash scene. Officers found that his silver sedan had front-end damages consistent with the crash.
The car was then impounded for evidence.
A search warrant was served at the driver's residence and officers found other items involved in the hit and run.
A records check on the driver showed that he was arrested for a DUI less than a year ago.
The driver was charged for homicide due to a special exception, the Watson Murder Rule.
He was transported to Ventura County Main Jail with a bail amount of $500,000.
