Lompoc residents to vote on cannabis industry tax increase

LOMPOC, Calif. - Lompoc leaders said they believe the city may be able to make more revenue from the cannabis industry.

They moved to allow voters to decide if increasing taxes on manufacturing and distributing marijuana is the right thing to do.

A special vote-by-mail election will be held on August 31, 2021, and would need more than 50% voter approval to pass.

If passed, it would change the structure from a flat tax on marijuana businesses to a tiered approach.

The tax would range from half a cent per dollar to two-and-a-half cents per dollar based on revenue.

City leaders believe the tax would generate more than one million dollars for the city.

The revenue would go into the city's general fund.
