Santa Maria Area Transit installs new bus stop shelters throughout city
SANTA MARIA, Calif. - Santa Maria Area Transit (SMAT) is installing new bus stop shelters with amenities throughout the City of Santa Maria in an effort to better serve riders.
Eight new shelters have already been constructed in the place of old ones.
These new shelters are equipped with benches, trash receptacles and are enclosed to protect riders from the sun and rain. The shelters are also designed to be more easily seen by drivers and riders.
The city said they chose where to place the new shelters after reviewing the condition of each bus stop and identifying which ones had reached the end of their life.
Bus stops that were deemed fully functional received repairs and upgrades.
The renovations were funded by grants secured by SMAT.
