Santa Barbara YMCA Expands Programs to Fight Senior Loneliness

PATRICIA MARTELLOTTI I KEYT

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. (KEYT) — The Santa Barbara YMCA is expanding opportunities for older adults to stay active, meet people and build connections as concerns about loneliness and social isolation grow.

More than 5,000 seniors participate in local YMCA programs, a number that has increased about nine percent annually over the past five years.

Members can choose from more than 10 weekly programs, including pickleball, swimming and group fitness classes. Volunteer opportunities also allow older adults to get involved through coaching, fundraising and community projects.

The YMCA has steadily expanded its offerings since the pandemic to meet growing demand.

During the pandemic, the organization introduced online programming, eventually launching the YMCA 360 app. Members can now access workouts, participate in challenges and explore healthy recipes from home.

Pickleball has become an especially popular option, offering seniors a chance to stay active indoors regardless of the weather.

The YMCA plans to continue adding activities based on feedback from members, giving older adults a voice in shaping future programs.
