Escape attempt stopped at Santa Barbara’s Main Jail Monday night

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – Five unescorted inmates at the Santa Barbara Main Jail made it to an unauthorized location on Monday night before being located and returned to custody.

According to Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Office, around 8:44 p.m. Monday night, during a group movement for routine linen exchange, five inmates were observed in an unauthorized location.

In response, Sheriff's deputies initiated a lockdown as deputies responded to the exterior of the jail to assist detail Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Office.

Santa Barbara Sheriff's Office relay that the five inmates defeated one layer of security, but multiple layers of security remained between the inmates and the public.

Sheriff's deputies are currently conducting a criminal investigation of the incident and the identities of those involved will remain withheld until the end of that investigation detail Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Office.
