Santa Barbara County issues closures for Miramar and Fernald Point beaches due to sewage spill

Santa Barbara County Public Health Department

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – Santa Barbara County Public Health Department has issued a beach closure notice for Miramar and Fernald Point beaches within 2000 feet of San Ysidro Creek outfall due to a sewage spill.

Around 5,760 gallons of untreated sewage spilled from a compromised sewage line into San Ysidro Creek on East Valley Lane in Montecito.

San Ysidro Creek's outfall into the ocean is adjacent to Posilipo Lane and posted signs warn the public to avoid recreational water contact.

Santa Barbara County Environmental Health Services already recommend swimmers and surfers to avoid contact with water following rain for at least three days because of potential health risks associated with storm water runoff.

Storm water runoff is untreated rain water that can increase the risk for certain illnesses including: rashes, fevers, chills, ear infections, vomiting and diarrhea.

Beachgoers should especially avoid areas near outfalls for drainpipes and creeks after rain.
