SANTA BARBARA, Calif. -- Santa Barbara police saves an unconscious man with NARCAN on Tuesday afternoon.

On Tuesday at around 1 p.m., Santa Barbara police responded to a 911 report of an unconscious man inside Alameda Park. The man was reported not be breathing.

Officers arrived to find that the man was suffering from a possible acute drug overdose. Officers immediately administered NARCAN and began resuscitating the unconscious man.

Santa Barbara City Fire arrived and took over with life saving techniques and within a minute, the man was said to be fully revived, conscious and breathing on his own.

Police say medical experts determined that the NARCAN dose reversed the harmful effect of the narcotics and likely saved the man's life.

Police say in the last year, Santa Barbara Police Department has saved six lives with the use of NARCAN by police officers.

NARCAN is a nasal spray containing naloxone. It is FDA approved for the treatment of known or suspected opioid overdose. The spray is said to counteract the life-threatening effect of an opioid overdose.

The Santa Barbara Police Department has been provided with extensive training on how to administer NARCAN in the field, each patrol officer carries NARCAN in their unit.

Santa Barbara Police applied and receives medical clearance to use NARCAN from the State's Chief Medical Officer at the California Department of Public Health.

The Department also receives the actual NARCAN devices from the Naloxone Distribution Project, or NDP, which is funded by U.S. Substance Abuse Mental Health Services Administration and administered by the California Department of Health Care Services. Police say the project serves to combat opioid overdose-related deaths throughout California.
