Mustang Pride Buzzes For Victor Glover’s Congressional Space Medal Of Honor
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. (KEYT) - The crew of NASA’S Artemis II, which recently traveled around the moon and back, just received an honor by President Trump.
The Cal Poly campus is buzzing with mustang pride.
The Congressional Space Medal Of Honor was bestowed upon Cal Poly engineering alum Victor Glover and the other three Artemis II crew members this morning by President Donald Trump.
“I don't know how the buzz could get get any bigger, but it will, because receiving the Congressional Space Medal of Honor being on the list with folks like Neil Armstrong, the first person to walk on the moon, that's incredible,” says Cal Poly president Jeffrey Armstrong. “That's the power of Cal Poly. Learn by doing.”
The President also signed an executive order, mandating the creation and establishment of a US Space Academy.
“This sounds like it's going to be like a combined effort between like Space Force and NASA, because essentially they're trying to do similar things,” says Tyler Sova, a Cal Poly Aerospace Engineering Student.
Cal Poly president Jeffrey Armstrong says Glover’s legacy is potently recognized by current students and their families.
“Love Victor Glover, awesome guy,” says Tristin Koury, another Cal Poly Aerospace Engineering Student. “I think it's really neat that somebody from Cal Poly like, is being able to do all this really cool stuff. Obviously Artemis is kind of a really big deal to us. It's kind of all we hear about in aerospace.”
President Armstrong recalled the recent Fall Welcome event where over 5600 freshmen, more than a thousand transfers, and their families were surprised by Glover’s appearance as the guest speaker.
“He walked out from the end zone to the Madden Center in his blue NASA jumpsuit, there was a collective gasp of thousands of people,” says Armstrong. “They all knew who he was.”
NASA also made the formal announcement during the ceremony’s programming Friday morning that the mission for Artemis III is confirmed.
“It's exciting to see obviously this like next mission directly, but I think it's going to be really exciting to see, like the growing momentum around this,” says Sova.
