LOMPOC, Calif. - The Lompoc City Council approved and finalized the city's Pedestrian and Bicycle Master Plan on Monday.

This plan will assess the current safety conditions for pedestrians and bicyclists throughout the city, searching for ways they can be improved.

Heavily traveled school routes with high pedestrian and vehicle volumes, higher than average accidents and higher vehicle speeds will be top priorities for this plan.

The city said the pedestrian component of this master plan aims to create a
pedestrian network that encourages and facilitates walking by improving pedestrian safety and access to schools, shopping centers, employment, public facilities, and parks.

Bicycle safety will be improved by focusing on safety, convenience for high-demand routes and new bicycle facilities that promote healthy living and community growth.

The city council voted unanimously in favor of the project.

City of Lompoc staff is working on this project together with Lompoc schools and the Lompoc Unified School District, Allan Hancock College’s Lompoc campus, the local business community, Santa Barbara County Association of Governments staff, Healthy Lompoc Coalition, Santa Barbara County Public Works, California Department of Transportation (Caltrans), members of other partnering organizations, and community members in support of walking and biking.
