VENTURA, Calif. - Ventura Police responded to a structure fire after Ventura City Firefighters requested emergency police response Saturday morning.

An apartment on the 3400 block of Rexford Street went up in flames around 8:40 a.m.

After arriving, fire personnel determined that the resident of the apartment, named Alex Drown, had set fire to his own curtains and walls while under the influence of a controlled substance.

Drown, 34, reportedly became upset and threw glass bottles at the manager of the apartment complex. Drown also momentarily armed himself with a knife and made threats.

When officers arrived on the scene, they began negotiating with Drown to get him out of the apartment. Police said they could hear Drown breaking objects inside.

Finally, Drown exited his apartment voluntarily and was taken into custody.

Drown was arrested for assault with a deadly weapon and arson. Ventura County Superior Court also shows that Drown has two open criminal cases from 2019 for charges of burglary, possession of a stolen vehicle and resisting arrest.

No one was injured during this incident.
