Juan Carlos Eligio, 18, was arrested Tuesday afternoon for robbery, elder abuse and resisting arrest.

PORT HUENEME, Calif. - The Port Hueneme Police Department responded to a report of an attempted armed robbery that had just occurred at 2:40 p.m. on Tuesday.

Police said the crime happened to a 74-year-old woman who was bringing food to her elderly mother who lived in the senior living apartments at the 100 block of East Scott Street.

The suspect, Juan Carlos Eligio, reportedly approached the victim after she had parked her car and was preparing to remove her items.

Eligio allegedly grabbed the victim's car keys from her and fled the area temporarily. When he returned moments later, he attempted to get into the victim's vehicle.

The victim struggled to get Eligio out of her car which caused both of them to fall to the ground.

The scuffle ended when two Port Hueneme city employees saw the assault and yelled at Eligio as they approached the victim. The woman was not injured.

Eligio then fled the area on foot.

A Port Hueneme Officer spotted Eligio in the area of Ventura Road and Clara Street after receiving a call about the attempted robbery.

After a brief foot pursuit, the Officer caught the suspect and took him into custody.

Juan Carlos Eligio, an 18-year-old Oxnard resident, was booked at the Ventura County Jail on charges of robbery, elder abuse and resisting arrest. His bail is set at $50,000.
