Sellers, Central Florida throttle Cal State Fullerton 72-44
ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — Jaylin Sellers scored 15 points and reserve Marchelus Avery was one of three players to score nine points and Central Florida beat Cal State Fullerton 72-44 on Thursday night.
Avery’s fellow reserve Thierno Sylla also scored nine and Shemari Allen scored nine for UCF.
Grayson Carper scored 13 points and Vincent Lee 10 for Cal State Fullerton.
The Knights (2-1) led for the remainder when Sylla made a 3-pointer to make it 8-7 with 11:04 before halftime. Cal State Fullerton’s DJ Brewton made a layup to reduce the Titans’ deficit to 18-15 with 4:31 before the break. UCF closed the half with a 13-3 burst and led 31-18 at halftime.
Brewton’s layup with 17:26 left brought Cal State Fullerton (1-2) within 32-26, but it failed to score over the next six minutes and UCF capitalized scoring 14 points in that span for 46-26 advantage.
The Knights and Titans had only matched up once before Thursday with UCF earning a 68-52 victory on Nov. 15, 2018. That win came in the first round of the Myrtle Beach Invitational in Conway, S.C., a tournament the Knights eventually won.
