Gov. Newsom focuses on homelessness, affordable housing in State of the State address
SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Gov. Gavin Newsom addressed the state of California on Wednesday in his second State of the State address.
Newsom said California is inspiring the country and creating more jobs. He said one in seven new jobs in the US in the last ten years has been created in California.
Newsom focused on homelessness, affordable housing and mental illness.
"More density and more certainty. It is time for California to say yes to housing. We can no longer wait," Newsom said.
The homeless population in California increased by 16 percent last year to about 151,000 people.
Newsom also said the state needs to expand services for addiction treatment.
The governor created a state and local "behavioral health task force" to look at the link between mental illness and substance abuse.
