SIMI VALLEY, Calif. -- Simi Valley police warned residents Thursday to keep their pets indoors. A mountain lion is suspected of attacking two dogs.

The first call came in around 10 p.m. Wednesday. A Simi Valley resident reported a mountain lion had attacked a dog, police said.

Police received another call about 2:30 a.m. Thursday morning of a mountain lion attacking a dog in the 5400 block of Evening Sky Drive.

The homeowner told officers she let her dog outside, then a mountain lion attacked the dog. The resident said she jumped on the mountain lion's back and tried to pry its mouth open.

The animal then growled at her and she ran back inside her home.

When officers arrived, they saw a mountain lion that appeared to be eating the dog, police said.

The mountain lion then left the backyard. On Thursday, sometime between 6:15 and 7:15, a mountain lion, possibly the same one, was reported three times to police.

The Simi Valley Police Department is working with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife on how to best address this situation.
