Hurricane Milton spawned high number of destructive, deadly tornadoes

FT. PIERCE, Fla. (AP) — Tornadoes spawned by Hurricane Milton caught many Floridians by surprise as they prepared for heavy wind, rain, and storm surges. Several dozen twisters were reported by eyewitnesses, which is notable since the state typically sees 50 tornadoes in an entire year. The number of confirmed tornadoes is expected to rise in the coming days as clean up and recovery continue. Climate scientists and meteorologists say the appearance of tornadoes before and during hurricanes isn’t unusual, but the ferocity ahead of Hurricane Milton’s arrival was.
