Alabama inmate executed for the shooting death of man in 1993 robbery

ATMORE, Ala. (AP) — Alabama has executed an inmate for the shooting death of a man during a 1993 robbery. Officials say 49-year-old Casey McWhorter was executed Thursday by lethal injection at a southwest Alabama prison. McWhorter was convicted of capital murder and sentenced to death for the death of 34-year-old Edward Lee Williams in Marshall County. He was three months past his 18th birthday at the time of the killing. Defense attorneys unsuccessfully sought a stay from the U.S. Supreme Court. They argued the death sentence was unconstitutional because Alabama law does not consider a person to be a legal adult until age 19.
