SANTA BARBARA COUNTY, Calif. - A local program that collects unwanted medications released its first annual report on Friday for 2018.

The Santa Barbara County MED-Project collected medicine from 32 kiosk drop-off sites throughout the county.

About 9,000 pounds of unused medications were collected during the year.

The program assures that any unwanted or expired medications can be disposed of safely. It also protects the environment by giving people an alternative to flushing unwanted medicines down the drain.

The Santa Barbara County Public Health Department expects about 9,000 pounds of unwanted medicine will be collected by the end of 2019 as well.
