GOLETA, Calif. - Santa Barbara County firefighters responded late Monday night to a brush fire in a homeless encampment.

The fire started near the southbound lanes of Highway 101 between Los Carneros and Fairview. Firefighters made good progress of knocking down the flames, according to Fire Captain Daniel Bertucelli.

When first responders arrived on scene, they thought the fire was in a building but they realized it was a large homeless encampment that was on fire.

Traffic control was in place on the 101 southbound, with some delays anticipated.

No injuries were reported. No structures were damaged or threatened.

Engine companies will remain on scene to continue to mop up hot spots.
