Eye on Crime: Santa Maria man arrested for burglary, stolen car

A Santa Maria man has been arrested for burglarizing a home and allegedly making threats to the occupants.

Police arrested Joey Zamudio the following day on a separate call, picking him up in a stolen vehicle. Police say he was also in possession of a loaded firearm.

Santa Maria Police received a call of a residential burglary in progress on the 1800 block of Duke Drive the night of Sunday, October 20. The person who called 911 said Zamudio was making threats. When police arrived the suspect had fled.

According to Santa Maria Police Lieutenant Paul Van Meel, the next day officers responded to a call of a stolen vehicle.

“Ultimately Zamudio was found to be not only in possession of the stolen vehicle, but he also had several felony warrants outstanding,” Van Meel said. “So he was arrested for the stolen vehicle and the warrants.”

An investigation determined Zamudio was the suspect from the previous night’s burglary.

“The officers and the detectives were able to piece together based on the totality of what they were seeing, and dealing with Zamudio, the likelihood that he was involved with the burglary from the night prior,” Van Meel said.

The 21-year-old was booked into Santa Barbara County jail. Zamudio is facing charges of residential burglary, criminal threats, stolen vehicle, felon in possession of a loaded firearm, and several outstanding felony warrants.
