Oxnard police arrest man suspected in shooting, selling of firearm

Oxnard police arrested a man who they say was involved in a shooting and selling of an illegal firearm.

At around 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday, officers with the Oxnard Police Department were dispatched to Shooter’s Paradise at 1910 Sunkist Circle in reference to a subject attempting to sell a firearm with an obliterated serial number.

Officers contacted with Audwin Darrett, 58, of Oxnard inside the business. Darrett was in possession of a rifle at the time of contact.

Officers ran a records check and it showed that Darrett was prohibited from possessing a firearm based on a prior felony conviction.

Officers also believed that Darrett matched the description of a suspect from a shooting that occurred the previous day around 8:30 p.m.

Officers contacted investigators from Violent Crimes Unit and they responded to assist.

In the shooting incident on Monday, a suspect entered One Stop Liquor on 1061 West Wooley Rd. and brandished a rifle at a man.

The suspect followed the man through the store and verbally threatened him while holding the rifle and then exited.

A while later, the suspect fired several shorts at the man with at least one round entering the liquor store.

When police arrived, both victim and suspect fled the scene.

Investigators continued to investigate the case and identified Darrett as a suspect in that shooting.

On Thursday, investigators contacted Darrett at the Ventura County Jail where he was in custody for illegally possessing the rifle.

Investigators arrested Darrett for two counts of assault with a firearm and one count of shooting into an inhabited dwelling.

The investigation is currently ongoing and a photo of Darrett was not released.

Anyone with any knowledge of the shooting incident is encouraged to contact Detective Ricardo Vegas at 805-385-8291.
