First-ever Santa Barbara County Farm Day kicks off

Ten Santa Barbara County farms, ranches, wineries and agricultural organizations opened their doors to the public.

“This is an amazing day. It’s an opportunity for all the different pieces of the agriculture community to open their doors to showcase all the work they do,” said Erin Krier, an agriculture instructor at Allan Hancock College, who participated in this year’s first-ever Santa Barbara County Farm Day.

Visitors of all ages got to enjoy an array of agricultural activities, farm tours and learn from local farm growers.

Farm day has something for everyone.

Students at Allan Hancock College gave tours of their vineyard.

“California is an important part of agriculture. It helps supply food in the country. but we need that disconnect to disappear and help improve community outreach with agriculture,” said Nic Tasca, a continuing student at Allan Hancock College.

One of the highlights at the Allan Hancock farm is th greenhouse where visitors can learn about seed germination.

“I would say this is really important. It lets the consumer see how it’s grown. It lets them have that one-on-one connection with the producer and the consumer,” said Madison Flick, a student at Allan Hancock College.

The Santa Barbara County Farm Day is a self-guided tour where all you have to do is travel to the locations that interest you.
