Cal Poly shreds San Diego in season opener
For the first time since 2016, Cal Poly football sent its fans happy after a home opener.
The Mustangs’ offense was nearly unstoppable on Saturday, racking up more than 600 yards on offense as Cal Poly beat San Diego 52-34 at Alex G. Spanos Stadium to open the 2019 season.
Cal Poly won a home opener for the first time since beating San Diego three years ago. The Mustangs would lose to the Toreros in the first round of the NCAA FCS playoffs later that season.
Redshirt freshman quarterback Jalen Hamler threw for 221 yards and three touchdowns. He also ran for 96 yards and two scores on the ground in a dominant performance.
Cal Poly will play at Weber State next week. The Wildcats beat the Mustangs in Poly’s home opener last season.
