Stabbing in Lompoc marks second homicide this year

Lompoc police are investigating the second homicide in Lompoc to happen this month.

On Sunday night a man was stabbed and killed on South J Street.

Police are concerned about the rise in violent crimes in Lompoc compared to last year.

“It’s actually pretty concerning, last year we had one homicide and we are only three months into this year and we already have two homicides,” said Lompoc Detective Sergeant Agustin Arias.

Police responded around 9 p.m. to the call on Sunday. The man was rushed to the hospital but later died.

“I think that for a town this small it’s really a shame it’s getting out of control,” said longtime resident Darrell Tullis.

Detective Sergeant Arias said the number of other crimes this year is also alarming.

He said Lompoc had four attempted murders and 21 assaults with deadly weapon cases just this year alone.

“The presence for law enforcement needs to be greater throughout our city. Of course, when we are down by at least 12 officers it’s awful hard to have that presence,” said Tullis.

Detective Sergeant Arias said the city needs to provide more resources for the police. The police department has received budget and staffing cuts from the city.

Police ask for residents to report any information they have that can help with the investigation of the homicide. They said that right now is a crucial time for the community to work with law enforcement to overcome the violence in Lompoc.
