Lompoc celebrates Thompson Park renovations
After two years of work, it’s now time for play at Lompoc’s Thompson Park. On Thursday, the City celebrated renovations at one of its oldest parks.
City leaders said the changes were much needed.
“It was in a state that just really needed a facelift, essentially,” explained Sara Farrell, the Park’s project manager.
Gopher holes, uneven asphalt, and wheelchair accessibility issues were just some of the problems.
“The restroom building that used to be here was in a state of disrepair,” Farrell added.
Two years ago, the Lompoc Girls Softball Association took the lead in giving their beloved park that much needed “facelift”.
“New gopher wire was laid down here on the field. They also painted our concession stand to match all of the new buildings,” said Farrell.
Soon after, Lompoc businesses and the City joined volunteers in beautifying the space. The overall cost for this project came out to be $745,000. That was at no cost to the City – all thanks to grants and the community support.
On Thursday, project leaders were excited to celebrate all that hard work.
“It provides a place for people to come and gather and celebrate our community and what it stands for,” continued Farrell.
Park goers were just as happy.
“The park is fun!” Said Alex Swanson, who was at the playground with her mother.
“There was a lot of potholes, there was not a lot of enjoyable equipment and it’s a lot better now,” said Alex’s mom, Cassandra Swanson. “My kids love coming here.”
City leaders said they’re working on renovating other parks in Lompoc.
