UCSB students rescued out of Cathedral Peak Trail in Santa Barbara

Three UC Santa Barbara students are safe after getting lost on the Cathedral Peak Trail in Santa Barbara Sunday afternoon.

Santa Barbara County Dispatch received a report of three hikers that were lost around 4:00 p.m.

Three UCSB students, ages between 19 and 20, say they started their hike Sunday morning down Cathedral Peak Trail when they lost their way.

The students were able to use their cell phones to help the Search & Rescue team locate them and provide coordinates and a description of their location.

Crews located the students several hundred feet below the trail on the ocean side and were visible from the Jesusita and Tunnel trail intersection. Crews had to descend steep terrain from the Cathedral Peak Trail then hike across the face below the Dragon’s Back through the thick overhead brush.

The three male students were located, assessed, and then led back down the trail and returned to their car just before 9 p.m.

The Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office would like to remind people to prepare before going on a hike.
