New babies hatch at Charles Paddock Zoo

The Charles Paddock Zoo in Atascadero has a few new arrivals, two baby Caribbean Flamingos and a clutch of Burrowing Owl chicks.

“The Charles Paddock Zoo has experienced success with the breeding of the Caribbean Flamingos over the past three years and at this time, there are eleven eggs and TWO of them have hatched,” said Alan Baker, Zoo Director. “While not all of the Flamingo eggs will hatch, as it’s common to have a number of them that are not fertile, we are excited about the new arrivals.”

Baker says the zoo has been raising baby flamingos since 2015. The babies will have gray-white plumage for the first month and then will develop their trademark pink coloration normally associated with flamingos.

The Burrowing Owl has become extremely rare in many areas in the western United States and southern Mexico according to the Zoo.
